Teen Pregnancy Prevention

Community Care Services now offers a program in Attleboro with a focus on Teen Pregnancy Prevention. The two facilitators, Jaime Gaudor and Meghan Witherell, work with adolescents ages 11 - 14. They are utilizing the curriculum Making Proud Choices, in hopes that we can help make a difference in children's lives by giving them a broader foundation and knowledge base so that they can make good, informed choices in their lives.

Making Proud Choices is a science-based curriculum, developed by Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott and Dr. Konstance McCaffree. The curriculum covers a wide variety of topics, including, but not limited to, STDs, safer sex practices and negotiating skills. This information is learned in small groups in many different ways, including, group discussion and role-playing exercises. Upon completion of the program, students should feel comfortable in their knowledge and ability to abstain from sexual activity, or practice safer sex by using their knowledge of condoms and birth control options learned during the eight-module curriculum.

This program is funded by a grant from the Department of Public Health. The facilitators, Jaime and Meghan, have attended both the Making Proud Choices training and the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy Conference that took place earlier this year. Also, since starting to work with this curriculum, they have done extensive background research on the topics covered in the curriculum, in order to be better capable of handling the information being presented. Built into the grant is a program evaluation component so the efficacy of the program can be monitored on an ongoing basis.
