The Taunton Youth Court (TYC) is a partnership of
Community Care Services and the City of Taunton.
This youth empowerment program follows the
principles of restorative justice and provides an
alternative to out-of-school suspensions and
juvenile court involvement. Decisions regarding
sanctions and restitution are made by trained high
school students who volunteer their time to serve as
members of the TYC jury. An adult volunteer
“judge” facilitates the TYC proceedings.

In 2008 students demonstrated a 44% reduction in suspension rates, and a 65% increase in attendance for students involved. 77% of TYC defendants and/or their parents reported positive changes in at least one risk factor, the most common being "negative attitude towards school."
